On 6 February 2026, the Project Idea Note (PIN) *MD_PIN001 under the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) in the Republic of Moldova received a formal decision of no objection. The project focuses on capturing landfill gas and converting it into electricity, contributing to methane mitigation and renewable energy generation.
MD_PIN001, titled “Landfill gas (LFG) capture from landfill site and generating electricity by utilizing the biogas,” is developed by Bionica Energy SRL, which owns and operates the biogas capture facility at the landfill site located in Ţînțăreni commune, Anenii Noi district.
The Ţînțăreni landfill receives more than 500 tons of municipal solid waste per day from Chișinău and surrounding municipalities. As organic waste decomposes, it releases methane, a greenhouse gas with a much higher global warming potential than carbon dioxide.
The project captures the landfill gas generated at the site and uses the biogas to produce electricity. By preventing methane from being released into the atmosphere and converting it into energy, the project is expected to reduce emissions by around 90,000 tCO2 per year.
This initiative represents one of the largest methane mitigation efforts in Moldova to date and highlights the potential of landfill gas recovery as a practical climate solution.
SDG Impact Japan participates in the project as the Japanese representative-participant, and Climate NEO in the project as the Japanese co-participant supporting its development under the JCM framework and coordinating with Moldovan partners to ensure alignment with the mechanism’s requirements.
* PIN (Project Idea Note): A document used to explain the outline of the project to the partner country and confirm whether there is an objection.
